When All the World's Asleep...
A Gift You Can Give Your Hooping Tonight!
For too long now, it has been difficult to gather the time or the space for some serious one-on-one time with my
hoop. I yearn to literally let my hair down and lay down the moves I've been working on with complete and total
abandon. I long to lose myself in my favorite music playlist and indulge my hooping body's every desire. I want to
get sweaty with practice and heady with new ideas.

Alas, my darling and budding lil' 3 year old hooper seems always underfoot. Or the 80 pound Labrador. Not to
mention the creepy neighborhood guy who seems to stop and stare just a little too long for my comfort.

But the other night, staying up a little later than usual, sitting outside writing, it hit me. There was a marked lull in
the city's sounds. My eyes lifted from the computer screen and looked about. The street was asleep. The toddler
and dog were tucked snugly in their beds. Here was my chance! I had a clear, beautiful, silent evening. I had a
glass of wine. I had (of course) a mounting pile of hoops. And I had the entire world
all to myself.

And I knew exactly what to do. I've long wanted to choreograph a little-known, but astounding Aretha Franklin
song from one of her earliest albums,
Spirit in the Dark (1970). It's a raucous gospel-infused booty-shaker that
runs through slow blues to foot-stomping funk and ends up in full-blown revival mode.  So I grabbed my
newly-made pair of mini hoops and pressed Play-Repeat. I was getting the Spirit. And I was getting it in the Dark.

Since I haven't had a private space to hoop in since we've been
on the road, the experience was exhilarating. I
didn't think once about
how I looked or who might be walking by (at this hour?). The entire late-night sky provided
a welcome sanctuary for a long-overdue solo hoop session. Why in the world had this never occurred to me
before?

Tonight, give yourself the gift of the Midnight Hoop. Whether you've got a busy household, an active street, or just
precious little time during the day, you'll relish the too-rare romance of just you, your hoop, and the night sky. And
you'll keep coming back for more.

PostScript. After doing a little research on my favorite lyric from Spirit in the Dark - "Rise, Sally, rise / Put your hands on your hips/ and
cover your eyes/ and move," I discovered its origins in a children's rhyme "Little Sally Walker." The rhyme accompanies a circle
dance in which the person in the middle asks another in the circle to join in the center, mirroring the movements of the first. This
same children's rhyme also inspired Mark Rice, who wrote
Mustang Sally. Ah, circles...
