Is Modern Hooping Entering A Golden Age?
It's difficult to miss the excitement in the air.
Something in the hoop world is shifting, moving, and picking up incredible speed.
Events like Flow Show 2* and organized performance worldwide are spotlighting Hooping as a
movement art, joining our growing circle dance to the ranks of the most stunning and skillful things
you can do with your body and spirit. Master-teachers like Hoop Path and Hoop Technique are
ensuring the future of Hooping as a spiritual art and physical science. We're WAY past fur boots and
booty-shaking here, friends!
There are hoop groups in nearly every major city. Our neighbors and grandmothers are hooping. As a
community, we support an unbelievable number of hoop-makers, performers and teachers. (My family
and I live and travel the country on a bus, for crying out loud!) Go ahead and google-image "hoops" and
you'll turn up more of us than basketballs. We dance with hoops big and small, lighted and on fire. We
own more hoops than we do furniture. We've gone from a handful of hoop-stars to spawning enough to
warrant our own People magazine (make it happen, Hooping.org!) and paparazzi machine. I can already
see the Tweets: "OMG, I just saw Brecken eating a muffin at blah-blah cafe!"
Which leaves me to wonder and literally fantasize about the size and shape of things to come in and
through the growth of hoopdance. Are we as a community emerging from a kind of identity-seeking
adolescence into the kind of mindful maturity that will envision and produce a revolving, humming,
reverberating force on this planet? I can't help but get plum giddy just thinking about what's next!

Last week saw the premiere of "The Hooping Life" at the Sarasota Film Festival.
It sold out twice, brought our biggest hoop-stars out to the proverbial red carpet,
and garnered some impressive reviews. A feature-length documentary years in
the works, it appears at a fortuitous moment -- reflecting the life-changing power
of hooping right now. This "documentary" appears just as hoop dance is gaining
unprecedented momentum, showcasing our rising hoop-celebs and community in
their prime, rather than waxing nostalgic about an absorbing moment long gone.
