Next Stop: The Hooping Heartland
The Superhooper Bus (Finally!) Points Its Hoops & Horns Toward the Midwest
In August 2009, my family -- Drew, 3 yr. old daughter Navi, Atilla the 80
lb. black labrador, and I -- sold off everything at a yard sale in Atlanta GA
and moved into our new home: a 1992 Ford International school bus.
Our plan? To travel the country offering free hooping classes and fire
instruction where there little to none to be found, and help found or
expand the hoop-groups there.
The winter weather has kept us down South so far and our adventures
have already been well worth it. But tomorrow we set off to our priority
destination - the Midwest. Or, as we prefer to call it the American
Heartland: OH, IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, ND, SD, WI.

"The heartland of the country, where people could be down-to-earth
yet feel that the sky is the limit, not ashamed of, or cynical about, the American dream." -G.S.
Outside the region's largest cities lay small pockets of budding hoopers, and some who've not yet even met a
fellow circle dancer. The inspiring emails and phone calls we received from these states' hoopers over the years,
looking to connect with others in their region, are what motivated us to make this trip. And we're finally on our way!
Separated by so much physical distance from the Coasts where
hooping has had years to take hold, spread, and evolve, hoopers
in the Heartland have long occupied a special place in my
imagination.
Although we're all able to catch a glimpse of one another via the
wonderful world online, I like to think of the Midwest as a place
where hooping is growing up differently. My spidey-sense tells
me that I'm about to meet some of the most unique,
creative, and excited hoopers in the country!
Every region in the U.S has miraculously managed to retain its own special brand of fabulous (despite the national
retail chains that have made so much of our country's landscape look similar). So I can't wait to explore and
immerse myself in what is singularly Midwestern about this hooping community!
