Overlapping Circles.
An Invitation to Expand, Mash-Up, and Mingle Your Hoop
When I was in Grad School, the colleagues I enjoyed most studied outside my field. I never felt that they were
exploring different issues than I, but taking on similar questions from perspectives brand new to me. Their
vocabularies challenged me to venture outside my own discipline-based jargon and re-learn my craft from their
point of view. The best conversation I ever had about Philosophy, for instance, was on a plane sitting next to a
world-class astronomer.

"Picking up a staff for the first time this weekend, I was AMAZED by the crossover between the two props. It's all the excitement and
discovery as when I 1st began hooping, except I have this foundation of flow skills and techniques that translate easily to the staff.
At the same time, the staff has its own set of physics that carries my dance in a whole new direction. I definitely second Lara's
advice to embrace other flow toys!" ~ Tangled Macrame, 5/25/10

As the renaissance of movement arts picks up speed, we as hoopers
are exposed to exciting opportunities to learn from and collaborate with
our brothers-, sisters-, and cousins-in-flow. Why not invite them into
your circle or wiggle your way into theirs!

When planning your next community hoop jam, make it a bonafide
Flow-Fest by including some of these close kin to our hoop family:
Aerial Hoop (Lyra/Cerceau) & Fire-Eating
Stephanie & Jaime,
Hot Toddies Flaming Cabaret
  • belly dancers
  • poi, staff, veils and flag
  • jugglers
  • clowns
  • martial artists
  • aerialists
  • hip-hop and break dancers
  • stilt-walkers
  • burlesque/cabaret dancers
  • fire artists
  • drummers
  • acro-yoga
This list is hardly exhaustive at that! Dancers, movers and shakers of any kind will inspire you and your hoop to
step outside what you know. And when you step back in, the space inside your hoop will seem full of new
possibilities and brimming with fresh excitement.

Now, there's no reason to stop at the meet-n-greet. In Atlanta, our hooping classes are offered at a
yoga studio
that also hosts acro-yoga and poi workshops. In Cleveland OH (where we are now), you can take hooping at an
Exotic Dance studio or join the Cleveland Flow Collective for community play once a week. If these kinds of
get-togethers don't exist yet in your area, make them happen or take a class outside the usual (African Dance
classes at the local YMCA rocked my world).

The co-mingling of all movement arts can enrich our lives, our communities, our crafts, and our tools in ways that
we have only begun to imagine. Where will you start?
