A True History of the Hula Hoop
Hoop-Diva Judith Lanigan's Century-Spanning Novel
As a hooper and a literature buff, I simply cannot contain my excitement about this
book! Considering the time I spend online, I cannot imagine why I haven't stumbled
upon it before now, either.

My copy is on its way, but until then, allow me to share with you the extraordinary
premise of Judith "Miss Judy" Lanigan's first novel. The book parallels the lives of
two performing women whose stories, though separated by 400 years, mirror and
inform one another as well as the history of feminine street and circus performance.

Catherine is a street performer-turned-international burlesque hoop diva of our own
times based on the true story of the novel's author, acclaimed Australian performer,
Judith Lanigan.  The novel intertwines her challenges and triumphs with that of
Columbina, a gutsy female clown traveling Europe with one of the first Renaissance
Commedia Dell'arte Troupe's to emerge from the religious and war-torn Dark Ages.
As the book's overview puts it, "As Catherine and Columbina struggle [...] to assert
their rights as performers and women during times of profound change - their lives,
as if by magic, seem to interact."

As if the book's utterly imaginative and original premise weren't enough to garner our anticipation, the novel also
promises a measure of authenticity that only Lanigan's practiced research could provide. This fictional work
interweaves its narratives with historical images and documents about the hoop itself and early street
performance that she unearthed while writing her first book,
The Hula Hoop, a comprehensive study of the circle's
history and influences.
A True History of the Hula Hoop, published in August 2009, is further bolstered
by ecstatic reviews and awards in her home country. AND it has been optioned
for the making of a film by a UK-based producer and director Jean Pierre Jeunet,
who made
Amelie and Delicatessen.

Judith "Miss Judy" Lanigan's career and performances are so mind-blowing all on
their own (
Read about them here on her website), that I can't imagine the
measure of talent that adds authorship of this novel to her CV!

I ordered
